Overview

Diabetes mellitus is a long-term condition in which blood sugar levels stay higher than normal. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body produces little or no insulin; Type 2 diabetes, which is far more common, occurs when the body does not use insulin effectively.

Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol helps reduce the risk of complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Care is most effective when it is regular and when patients understand their condition.

Our diabetes care is led by Dr Prashant J. Thakkar, Consultant Physician with a special interest in diabetes and hypertension management. Because diabetes and high blood pressure often occur together, both are reviewed as part of your care.

What we help with

Diabetes care covers more than sugar readings. We can help with:

  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 1

Ongoing management of insulin therapy, sugar monitoring and avoiding very high or very low sugars.

  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 2

Diagnosis, lifestyle guidance, oral medicines and insulin when needed, with regular reviews.

  • Prediabetes

Identifying raised sugar levels early and making changes that may delay or prevent diabetes.

  • Diabetes with high blood pressure

Managing both conditions together, as each increases the risk from the other.

  • Medication & insulin review

Checking that your medicines are working, are taken correctly and suit your routine.

  • Screening for complications

Periodic checks of kidney function, cholesterol and other markers, with referrals for eye and foot care.

Signs to get checked

Consider a blood sugar test or consultation if you have:

  • Increased thirst or frequent urination
  • Unexplained tiredness or weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds or frequent infections
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • A family history of diabetes
  • High blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Diabetes during a previous pregnancy

Seek emergency care immediately if a person with diabetes is confused, very drowsy, unconscious, vomiting repeatedly or breathing fast. Call +91 98985 56496 or dial 108.
